Margaret Cross Norton (1891-194) served as the first state archivist for the Illinois State Archives, 1922-1957; co-founded the Society of American Archivists (SAA) in (1936), serving as the first vice president (1936-1937) and president (1943-1945); and edited The American Archivist (1946-1949).

She graduated from the University of Chicago with a master's degree in history and earned a a bachelor's of library science from the New York Library School om 1915.
