Character of Dr. Samuel Johnson; from Mrs. Piozzi's anecdotes concerning him (1788).

Book Image Not AvailablePiozzi, Hester Lynch Thrale

Piozzi, Hester Lynch Thrale. "Character of Dr. Samuel Johnson; from Mrs. Piozzi's anecdotes concerning him," as contained in The annual register, or a view of the history, politics, and literature for the year 1786. v. 28. London: J. Dodsley. It is the lead article in the "Characters" section of the text; other sections include, among others, History of Europe, State Papers, Natural History, Poetry, the last of which includes Ode to Edmund Malone, Esq. by John Courtenay, and Book Reviews, including one of Gillie's History of Ancient Greece. Original calf-backed marbled boards, black morocco label; leather spine. Condition, G-. Less than ideal reading copy. Front board unhinged otherwise binding is sound, pages are dusty, spine is chipped and cracked. Book plate says "Reginald Cholmondeley, Condover hall". Condover Hall was a British royal manor in Shropshire dating to the Saxon era (completed 1598) and was in and out of Crown tenure until 1586. The manor was owned by author Mary Cholmondeley (1859-1925) and her uncle, Reginald Cholmondeley from 1835-1910. American writer Mark Twain visited Reginald Cholmondeley at Condover in 1873 and 1879. Twain mentions this visit in his writings. Based on these dates, it appears this book was in the Library of Reginald Cholmondeley during Twain's visit there. A new owner inscription, "Geo. S. Addams, Chicago Illinois, Jany 27-1899," indicates that the book left Condover in 1899. Additional provenance information is available upon inquiry. Purchase by an institutional archives/special collections department or repository with similar collections (Cholmondeley, Piozzi or Twain) preferred.
